Heriot, George
George Heriot was an Edinburgh goldsmith, one of the
richest men in the city in his time. In 1597 he was given the honourable
appointment of Goldsmith to Anne of Denmark. Later in 1601 he was appointed
Goldsmith to Anne's husband King James VI.
Despite the importance of his role in Denmark Heriot
remembered his home of Edinburgh: on his death he left £23,625 for the
foundation of a hospital and school for the city’s poor - a considerable
sum at that time.
