Sir Adam Thomson's career began as a Fleet Air Arm pilot from Glasgow. The Scot went on to develop Caledonian Airways, which later became British Caledonian Airways: the biggest rival to the then publicly-owned British Airways.

Shortly after British Airways was privatised in 1987 it took over British Caledonian.
