famed for It's People! |
Biggar
has been a home to people for centuries. There is evidence that
Biggar Common was inhabited in the Stone Age, long before the
time of William Wallace's battles for freedom.
|
Cadger's
Brig, which legend associates with William Braveheart
Wallace's espionage activities in the 13th Century. Wallace
is just one of the historic figures associated with Biggar. |
Historical
figures from the time of William Braveheart Wallace
have connections with Biggar. Legend tells how one dark
night Wallace himself dressed up as a pedlar and crossed
Cadger's Brig to spy on the enemy English camp. He is alleged
to have achieved a victory within the burgh. One thing is
certain - William Wallace was familiar with the surrounding
area, having spent a fair amount of his time in Lanark
to the West of Biggar.
Bonnie
Prince Charlie is another of the Scottish heros associated
with Biggar - his army rested in
Biggar in 1746. |
