Strathclyde Country Park.
Motherwell
is one of the major towns in The
Clyde Valley, and is largely known for it's heavy industry.
As well as being one of the main areas for steel production, Motherwell
has a sparkling variety of leisure and heritage attractions.
The origins
of the district's name are not entirely clear. The name Motherwell may
have come from either the ancient "Lady Well" in the
area or from the Gaelic "the level place above water".
Though
Motherwell is known for it's iron and steel industries, it has not always
been an industrial centre. Like many towns in The
Clyde Valley, up until the end of the seventeenth century the primary
activity in the district was agriculture.
Motherwell
continues to move on, with the focus on industry in the area rapidly
moving from iron and steel towards electronics and customer service
call centres.
